Wider Acceptance and a Fresh New Life to Ayurveda in India
Because Ayurveda began in India, many of the best Ayurveda doctors and hospitals are found there also. These holistic physicians in India are both well trained and adept at administering Ayurveda treatments and herbal medicines.
Because these doctors go through exactly the same years of extensive training and internships as those seeking a medical degree, the field of Ayurvedic medicine enjoys the support of the residents as well as the legal system.
Ayurvedic doctors and hospitals are allowed the following treatments:
- Diagnosing health problems
- Dispensing herbal remedies and drugs
- Treating the health condition through massage
- Using mineral compounds and metals
Colleges and universities in India continually research and train Ayurvedic physicians who use this knowledge to help patients regulate the three basic energies which influence all areas of life and determine whether a person remains healthy or suffers a medical problem.
With this highly trained force of Ayurveda doctors to man them, Ayurvedic hospitals also flourish. Several can be found in the larger cities in India, and many have smaller clinics in outlying areas.
Condition of Ayurveda in United States and Europe
In the United States and Europe, Ayurveda has not reached the same level of acceptance that it enjoys in India.
There are no licensing procedures for Ayurveda doctors and hospitals in these countries, and the law does not support the use of modern medical interventions by these trained professionals.
Ayurveda doctors and hospitals in the U.S. and Europe should refrain from prescribing any type of herb or drug. All herbal medications should be given in the form of suggested treatments.
While Ayurveda doctors may give their thoughts about the cause of a health problem, they are not allowed to formally diagnose a patient. This means that most of them limit their treatment to dietary changes, vitamins, exercise, and aromatherapy.
New Laws Means New Life for Ayurvedic Treatments in the US
Fortunately, times are changing.
Several states in the U.S. have already begun to enact laws that allow some forms of treatment by Ayurvedic doctors and hospitals. These are generally in connection with already established and licensed medical facilities, but the field is growing.
Some of the medical specialties in which one might find some of the practices of Ayurveda include the following:
- General practitioner
- Physical therapy
In these fields, a licensed doctor may have received extra courses in Ayurvedic medicine. They are then allowed to use some of this knowledge in their practice. Those practicing Ayurvedic massage must also be licensed to do so. To learn more about Ayurveda, read through the topics on the following pages.
